Fitness often not a priority for college students
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Along with mothers cooking and the family dog, regular exercise is too often among the childish things young adults leave behind when they make the move from home to college.
Attention should be paid to this drop off, experts say, because those inactive in youth tend to remain inactive over their lifetime.
The transition from late adolescence to early adulthood represents the most dramatic declines in physical activity across a persons life, according to Dr. Matthew Kwan, a researcher at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.
Kwan said campaigns tend to focus on increasing activity in adults.
Thats important, but its when declines have already occurred, he said. This is a critical period where we can actually intervene.
In a recent study that followed 683 Canadian adolescents from 12 to 15 years old for 12 years, researchers headed by Kwan found a 24 percent decrease in physical activity from adolescence to early adulthood.
The research, which appeared in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed declines were steepest among young men entering university or college. Kwan said it might be a consequence of the big drop off in organized sports activity after high school.
Team sports, varsity activities tend to decrease or drop off entirely, he explained. For those who go to college, studies become more important. Then theres the social aspect that eats up their disposable time as well.
Women, already less active in high school, showed only a modest decline in physical activity.
It may be that girls experience the greatest declines earlier in adolescence, Kwan said.
Comparing the drop in physical activity to other risky behaviors such as smoking and binge-drinking, researchers found that while smoking and drinking began to plateau in early adulthood, inactivity continues its downward slide.
Smoking and binge drinking grab a lot of focus, but physical activity continues to decline, he said. It never really gets back up. As they get older, people just get more inactive.
Dr. James Pivarnik, an expert with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), said much depends on the college or university.
Does the university you attend have the infrastructure to facilitate organized exercises, fitness centers, intramural sports? said Pivarnik, an exercise physiologist at Michigan State University. The built environment, as we call it, has a lot to do with how active people are.
Pivarnik, who is active in ACSMs Exercise is Medicine On Campus, initiative to promote physical activity at colleges and universities, suggests that students factor in fitness opportunities when deciding which school to attend.
It could be almost a recruiting tool — show me your workout facility, he said. Most of these kids are changing their environment. It could be a factor.
To create a more fitness friendly campus, Pivarnik suggests, find out what works in other places. Then get the administration on board.
(Increasing) walking paths, changing where people park, providing access to facilities, he said. You cant just say We need $15 million dollars. Youve got to show some suggestions.
And ask questions. He notes that some universities reserve the athletic facilities for their athletes. They are off limits to the general student population.
Why cant we use the athletic facilities? he said. Cant we have open swim or running on the track? Sometimes its just simple communication.

BMW’s compact crossover mixes slick feel with cargo space
BMW has made life a little more difficult for some of its potential customers by adding a junior member to its Sports Activity Vehicle range.
The awkwardly named but right on the money in terms of trendiness premium compact crossover X1 xDrive28i arrived on the market in mid-2011 after making its debut in Europe and other global markets in 2009, where it has already proven a popular choice with Bimmer buyers. And that will be the case here too if initial sales are any indication.

Whiteout: BMW M Teams Up With K2 to Produce Skis
BMWs newest M product might only have the equivalent of a couple horsepower, but it has the potential to out-maneuver the mighty X6 M Sports Activity Coupe in the snow: it’s the K2 LTD BMW Design Edition downhill ski.
BMW’s M line might already have two all-wheel drive vehicles with more than 500 horsepower (the X5 M and X6 M produce 555 horsepower thanks to a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine), but the partnership with famous skimaker K2 might help BMW drivers when the roads end and the slopes begin. The skis are specially shaped with a bent front shovel section and K2′s Baseline technology, which it says improves grip on the edge of the ski.
From a design standpoint, the skis are immediately recognizable as BMW products. One version has a tire tread design on the top, while the other has the BMW badge on the front, with the iconic blue and red M color stripes running the length of the skis. If only they boasted flame surfacing and iDrive controller knobs.
Want a pair of the skis to, say, put on top of your 335i xDrive? Well, you’re going to have to work for them. The skis aren’t available for purchase, but are instead offered as a prize for participants in the BMW xDrive Cup. The cup is an informal competition that is taking place all across ski resorts in Europe.
Skiers can check in to certain venues and get virtual badges for skiing down certain slopes, completing slaloms, or participating in an online scavenger hunt. Anyone who gets five or more badges is automatically entered to win one of 500 limited-edition ski sets. Think winning skis is a bit pedestrian? Compete a bit harder and score 15 badges, and you’ll be entered to win a BMW X1 SUV.
Keep in mind a European ski vacation that ends in winning skis would still be a bit cheaper than M’s other snow-friendly offerings. After all, a X6 M will cost you $90,000, which is equal to about 15 round-trip, business class flights to Vienna.

JDP Acquisitions agree London Olympics will boost economy
JDP Acquisitions, an outsourced marketing and event sales
company operating in central London, has worked alongside a key
sponsor of the 2012 Olympicsto
increase their market share and consumer base.
A key factor in the promotion of the brand has been the
organisations commitment and support of the London Olympics. JDP
Acquisitions acknowledges the huge benefits of hosting the
Olympics, the largest international sporting event in the World,
for both the UK economy and specifically London.
With all the negative press surrounding the cost of the Olympics
people are ignoring the obvious benefits for our national economy
and also our national identity, the Olympics is more than just a
sporting event, it’s a chance for the United Kingdom to show the
billions watching at home, or even visiting from overseas what our
nation is capable of. Here at JDP Acquisitions we feel the money
spent in the run up to the Olympics is simply a short term
investment which will bring in a huge return and have a long
lasting legacy. says Jim Pollard, Managing Director of JDP
Acquisitions.
The comments of JDP Acquisitions Managing Director, Jim Pollard are
supported by articles written in the years following the 2008
Beijing Games.
The Beijing Olympic Games, which kicked off with a glamorous
opening ceremony, brought China much closer to the world at a time
when they were going through great changes. The opening ceremony attracted
the worlds first genuine 1 billion television audience, making
it the worlds most watched live event in human history, exceeding
the moon landings, the funeral of Princess Diana and Barack Obamas
inauguration.
Managing Director of
JDP Acquisitions, Jim Pollard adds ‘An IOC report concluded
that by hosting the Olympics, China has improved infrastructure and
tightened supervision on food and water security. This shows how
varied some of the benefits of hosting an event such as the
Olympics can be for an economy’.
JDP Acquisitions say many believed the Olympics boosted national
confidence as China began playing an increasingly important role in
the international arena. Many Chinese see the Olympics
success and the home countrys dominance in the gold medal tally as
an affirmation of their progress in the three decades since
economic reforms were launched, said a recent AP report.
Their success, along with Chinas rising economy, has instilled a
new confidence in many Chinese,
The London Olympics are expected to reach similar levels of
international support, and the organisers have promised Londoners
lasting benefits. JDP Acquisitions pronounce the legacy of
the 2012 Games has started by highlighting the benefits such as the
regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley, business support initiatives,
jobs and skills training, cultural and creative programmes and
sports programmes which will open up
sports opportunities for all Londoners
London 2012 will leave behind great sporting facilities, including
swimming pools, cycling facilities and new tennis courts. These
will be open for all to enjoy, and could help to foster the Olympic
champions of the future.
Londoners will be given the opportunity to get involved in sport
through PlaySport London, the name given to all sports activity
funded from the LDA’s £15.5 million Olympic legacy funding. With
match funding, over £30 million will be invested in grass roots
sport by 2012 including £7.5 million in community
facilities.
JDP Acquisitions are firm supporters of the 2012 London
Olympics, and can see the obvious benefits in the creation of
thousands of new jobs, a dramatic investment in training for
